Alfesta History

The History of Alfesta

Alfesta is the annual national gathering of the Alfa Romeo Owners Club of Australia, hosted each year by a different state division. The event traces its origins back to 1975, when the Victorian club organised the first national gathering of Alfa Romeo enthusiasts at Lake Boga, near Swan Hill in Victoria, over the Queen's Birthday long weekend.

The name "Alfesta" was coined by Victorian member Bob Gardiner, combining Alfa with the Italian word festa, meaning celebration. The inaugural event attracted around 45 participants, including small contingents from Western Australia, Queensland and New South Wales, with the remainder from Victoria. The weekend included a motorkhana, a visit to a local motor museum, and a memorable dinner cruise on a riverboat.

Although Victorian members had been holding similar gatherings for several years prior, Alfesta 1975 marked the first truly national meeting of Alfa Romeo enthusiasts in Australia.

The following year, Alfesta 1976 was hosted in Tanunda in the Barossa Valley, South Australia, again over the Queen's Birthday weekend. By this time additional Alfa Romeo clubs had formed in New South Wales and Queensland, and the event began to take on a truly national character. Activities included a motorkhana, economy run and concours event, along with visits to the National Motor Museum at Birdwood and several Barossa wineries. Later that year the South Australian club was formally established.

During the Tanunda gathering, a small but enthusiastic contingent from Queensland proposed an idea that would shape Alfesta for decades to come: that the event be held each Easter and hosted in rotation by the various state clubs. The Queensland club, then less than a year old, also volunteered to host the following year's event.

Alfesta 1977, held at the Broadbeach Hotel on the Gold Coast, proved to be one of the best organised events to that point, featuring visits to Sea World, Binna Burra and Advancetown Dam, along with a concours at Surfers Paradise Raceway and a formal dinner dance.

The following year marked an important milestone. Alfesta 1978, hosted by New South Wales in the Blue Mountains, was the first Alfesta held over the Easter long weekend, establishing a tradition that has continued for almost five decades.

Since those early gatherings, Alfesta has evolved into a much-anticipated annual event on the national Alfa Romeo calendar. Over the decades it has been hosted in cities, wine regions and coastal destinations across Australia, bringing together Alfisti for a long weekend of driving, social activities, displays and celebration of the Alfa Romeo marque.

Just as importantly, Alfesta has fostered friendships and connections between Alfa Romeo enthusiasts from across the country and around the world, a tradition that continues to this day.

Alfesta Through The Years

Since the first Alfesta in 1975, the event has travelled across Australia, hosted by different state divisions of the Alfa Romeo Owners Club of Australia. Each gathering reflects the character of its host region while maintaining the traditions that define Alfesta – scenic drives, observation runs, displays of Alfa Romeo cars, social activities and memorable dinners shared among Alfisti.

Over more than five decades, Alfesta has been held in cities, wine regions, coastal towns and alpine destinations across the country. The following timeline provides a brief look at each gathering and the locations that have helped shape this unique national tradition.

The 1970s – The Beginning

The first Alfesta gatherings laid the foundations for what would become a cherished national tradition. Enthusiastic Alfa Romeo owners travelled across state borders to enjoy driving activities, social gatherings and the camaraderie of fellow Alfisti.
